I have been hesitant about starting another blog but here it goes! I started blogging when I started the graduate program in the “Great Books” at St. John’s College in Santa Fe, NM in order to share the things I was learning with friends and family. Later I decided to start another blog, “Mind in the Heart” in order to share with those who cared about my journey to the Eastern Orthodox Church. When I left St. John’s College I stopped posting on the blog “Mumbling and Munching” and kept posting mostly quotations and articles concerning Orthodoxy at “Mind in the Heart”. Now that I have recently started another graduate program at Faulkner University in the Liberal Arts I have decided to start another blog in hopes that I can share some of the things that I am learning and to talk about some other things that just don’t fit the theme of “Mind in the Heart”.
The title of the blog is “Scholium” which simply means, according to Samuel Johnson, “a note, an explanatory observation”. So on this blog I plan on writing brief notes or observations about a wide range of quotations and topics. The picture of the bee on the blog is based on a quotation by St. Basil the Great who says,”therefore, in accordance with the whole similitude of the bees, that we should participate in the pagan literature. For these neither approach all flowers equally, nor in truth do they attempt to carry off entire those upon which they alight, but taking only so much of them as is suitable for their work, they suffer the rest to go untouched.”
